Googling your dreams is like googling your physical symptoms, and it tells you the worst. We’ve all done it (both), and we’re left with very little direction and a whole lot of anxiety.
We’re not given much clarity or direction, but we do have access to a well of information, and it’s almost impossible to sift through it and figure out what to take and apply to us.

For example, you have a dream about a black snake. You ask Google, “Hey Google, what’s the meaning of a black snake?” Google collects dream-interpretation information from posts, websites, blogs, and other places. It also provides links to dream interpreters and places like Reddit where we can all come together to discuss.
The problem is that the interpretation is broad and, most of the time, just a set of blanket statements. And, as most of us have learned, those blanket statements cannot apply to everyone because not everyone is the same. So, what exactly does Google provide when you ask, “What’s the meaning of a black snake dream?”
Google’s Answer:
Dreaming about a black snake usually represents hidden fears, potential danger, or a major life transformation. Because black is the color of the unknown, your subconscious mind often uses a black snake to point to things you cannot see or control. [1, 2]
Common Meanings
- Danger and Warnings: A black snake can act as a caution sign that a difficult situation, deceit, or an unpleasant person is entering your life.
- Transformation and Rebirth: Like all snakes, a black snake sheds its skin. This represents letting go of old habits, ending a chapter, or experiencing personal growth.
- Suppressed Emotions: The dark color can symbolize buried anger, fear, or power within yourself that is finally ready to surface.
- Hidden Threats: According to general consensus in online dream discussions like Quora, a long black snake often points to prolonged worry, anxiety, or an ignored problem you need to address.
Blanket Statements Make You Feel Unseen
Google actually makes some great points and seem to hit every angle – but that’s the problem. They hit every angle, or seem to. Because it tries to come from every angle, it almost (or does) completely miss your angle, and the need for you to understand is still alive and well. Google and its results, yes, even the posts and blogs from other dream interpreters, cannot give you an answer that is tailored for you. The meaning of a black snake dream (and other dreams) completely depends on who you are and the life you live.
For example, a black snake dream means protection, comfort, and peace with transformations – this is largely because the snake is an animal guide, or spirit animal, for me. I also understand this meaning because I dissected the dream by looking at my actions and the snake’s actions, the colors, my emotions, the smell, and other details.
My meaning of a black snake may not fit the next person because we have different experiences. My fiancé had a dream about a black snake. In this dream, she was swimming down a river, and a black snake swam past her, grazing the side of her body. Instead of experiencing the emotions that Google explained, she felt pulled to the snake and felt she needed to work with it. A few days later, I worked with a client out of my home office, and she said, “I keep seeing a black snake. Does anyone here work with Lilith?” My jaw dropped. I said, “Yes, my fiancé does.” She said, “Lilith is calling and keeps pushing the black snake in front of her to get her attention.”
This black snake was a call to my fiancé to turn toward the meaning of Lilith (Personal sovereignty, Radical self-empowerment). So, this could be seen as transformation, but the only way she could understand it and apply it to her life was by understanding the symbolism through her experiences. Because she did, she understands the transformation needs to be within self-empowerment and authenticity. Without making this connection, she more than likely would’ve questioned where to apply this transformation – for example: work, love, family, etc.
When my clients come to me for dream interpretation, we have an in-depth session where we talk about every detail, their emotions during and after the dream, and their current life situations. I do my best to encourage my clients to look at and understand as many details in the dream as possible. All of this information matters because it is your subconscious and the energy around you trying to help you understand your life and path in your waking life. Looking into your dreams in depth like this will allow you to understand how to apply this information in your life.
A detail in my fiancé’s dream was extremely important: while floating down the river, a group of men on the side screamed to be afraid of the snake and stay away from it. She questioned why they were encouraging that when this snake was not only minding its business, but she felt so calm, empowered, and connected to it. My fiancé was born and raised in Southern Baptist, where the culture (the men) teaches women to “sit, obey, and be pretty”- this is extremely disempowering. However, the snake connected to Lilith represents self-empowerment and Authenticity, which is the complete opposite of the church.
Understanding her life situations, emotions, and spiritual & energetic practices helped us understand her subconscious, and her spirit is encouraging her to stay on the path of authenticity and ignore the false warnings from the people and things in her life that push control, stagnation, and self-abandonment.
You see, Google cannot look at this information for you because it hasn’t lived your life and cannot hear it or understand how to dissect it. When you come to me for a dream interpretation, I will ask you many details. For example, if you had a dream where you went back to school and you forgot your locker number,
I will ask dream details like:
- How did you feel as you walked down the halls?
- What were you wearing?
- What was the age of everyone?
- Were you a child or an adult?
- What grade were you in?
- What colors were the walls and lockers?
- What emotions did you notice in others?
- What are you currently going through in life?
Those are just some examples of what my questions look like. Depending on your answers, I can tailor them even more.
When we dive deep into dreams, I often recommend that my clients have ways to release the information we dig up. Often, it sheds light on where we need ourselves the most, and this can reveal trauma.
